There is one phenomenon regarding the current generations that is becoming more and more evident to me with the passing of time.  And, the more that I become aware of it the more I see its fruit everywhere I look.   I see myself  situated in a unique vantage point between the middle aged parents and the children that they are raising.  This phenomenon is your basic example of cause and effect and really works as an example of what not to do.  You see, in Deuteronomy 6:6 and 7, God tells His people to take His Word and become so ingrained in it that it became part of them.  He goes a step further and commands His people to “teach them diligently  to your children.”  These parents were to know God’s Word so well that it became a part of every aspect of their lives.  But, it did not stop there, oh-no.  It was their job as parents to pass this on to the next generation.  Now, this was not something that simply happened through osmosis. (If my mother-in-law is reading this then click me for a definition of osmosis.)  Look at what the text says.  Teach them diligently.  Now, when I think of  the term diligent, I conjure up ideas of day in and day out, never stopping, patiently working toward a set goal.  You have to be intentional when it comes to passing off your faith to your children.  Unfortunately what I see time and time again is that we have started to pass this chore off to someone else.  We have programs for everything in every stage of life, and this is no different in the church.  We have programs for the nursery aged children to the young adult programs.  We have effectively taken our responsibly in this regard and have passed if off to someone we pay to put on a fun program with a catchy title every week or so.  We have almost completely ceased to take the time to instill in our children what is truly of utmost importance.  What absolutely kills me about this whole thing is the fact that we are surprised when the next generation begins to abandon ship en masse.   Maybe we need to get back together as a family and get Biblical about how we spend our time and be intentional about equipping the next generation and passing off the torch.
