What motivates you? What is it that drives you and gives your life purpose? Now, I’m not talking about the everyday essentials. Obviously, I am motivated to go to work so I can make money to pay my mortgage, buy food, and provide a certain standard of living for my family. I am not talking about short term goals like losing weight, running every day, or trying to be a happier person. I’m thinking big picture. What is it that keeps you pressing on every day when you just don’t feel like you can do it anymore? What do you want to achieve in your lifetime that lifts you eyes from the tasks at hand inspires you to press on?
I know that for myself, I want to be part of something that is bigger than just me. I want to be part of something that is solid and real. Life is transient, a vapor in the wind. Like the fog that lingers at dawn only to be burned into a mere memory by the rising of the sun, our lives are but a brief moment in the cosmic span of time. When our moment is gone, we may be remembered by a few, but forgotten by most. The desire to make a difference, the desire to leave something substantial behind is what drives me on. But in a world that dies and fades, what remains?
The one constant is the story of God’s sweeping epic that ties together all of time. From the creation of existence itself, God’s purpose has progressed without fail. The story of His grand narrative is being written, and we all have parts to play. What role will I take? Will I be the bumbling fool who goes about my days without a clue that there is something larger at hand? Or will I be the loyal soldier who presses on in spite of the odds to accomplish something spectacular? We all have an opportunity to be connected to something bigger than ourselves. In fact, like it or not, we are all part of God’s story. The only question becomes what that part is.
What motivates me is the desire be a part of that story. It gives new meaning to my routine, everyday life. It keeps my eyes focused upward and onward. Someday I want to look back on my life and see how my story intersects with The Story in an amazing way. So, what role will you play?
